Nine out of Ten Dentist Recommend Dog Treats: (The tenth dentist owned a cat.) The truth is, store bought dog biscuits and cookies are recommended for your dogs because they serve to clean the tarter build-up off their teeth. Many are also high in carbohydrates and fat. If you want to have more control over your pets snack time try a couple of the following recipes.
- 1½ cup whole wheat flour
- ½ cup soy flour
- 1 tbsp. salt
- 1 cup peanut butter (your choice)
- ¾ cup milk
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine wheat and soy flour, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowel whisk together peanut butter and milk until well combined and smooth. Stir peanut butter/milk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until it becomes doughy. Sprinkle flour on counter and roll dough in flour. Knead lightly. Roll dough out to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into squares about 1 – 2 inches. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 15 – 20 minutes until light brown. Let cool and enjoy.
Chicken in a Biscuit
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2/3 cups yellow cornmeal
- 2 tbsp. corn oil
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 3 eggs
- ¼ cup low-fat milk
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix 2 eggs and milk and set aside. In a second bowl beat the third egg and set it aside. Mix flour and cornmeal then mix in oil, broth and egg/milk mixture. Knead until dough is firm. Let sit for 15-20 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out until it is 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 1-2 inch squares and brush with the beaten egg. Bake for 25 – 35 minutes, until brown. Remove and cool.
Liver Lover’s Special
- ¾ cup wheat germ
- ¾ cup dry powdered milk
- 1 egg
- 3-½ oz liver flavored baby food
- 1 tbsp. brewer’s yeast or plain yeast
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients well. If mixture is too dry to blend together and bind add small quantities of water until it works. Spoon mixture with a teaspoon and drop onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake for about 20 -25 minutes.
For the Big Cheese
- 1 ½ cup whole wheat flour
- 1 ¼ cup grated cheddar cheese
- ¼ lb. corn oil margarine
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- A pinch salt
- As needed milk
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Grate the cheese and let stand until it reaches room temperature. Mix the cheese, softened margarine, garlic, salt and flour until creamy. Add enough milk to form thicken and form into a ball. Chill for 1/2 hour. Roll out in flour until about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 1 – 2 inch sizes. Bake for 15 – 20 minutes until slightly brown and firm.
